REMEMBRANCE COMMEMORATIONS IN BURGESS HILL

Burgess Hill Remembers: Community Events for Remembrance Day 2024

This November, the Burgess Hill community will come together to honour the sacrifices made by those who fought for our freedoms through a series of poignant remembrance events.   The Town Council are the lead co-ordinator of the events but work closely with the Royal British Legion.

On Wednesday 6 November, Youth Councillors and community representatives will plant imitation poppies at the former Royal British Legion site in the afternoon. This area will serve as a visual tribute, as the Remembrance Parade will pass by during the commemorative events.  The poppies have been lent to us by Haywards Heath Town Council who created them for the D Day commemorations.

The Remembrance Parade is scheduled for Sunday 10 November, departing from the rear of Cyprus Road car park at 10:15 AM. Youth groups and local organizations will be involved and a rolling road closure will be in effect to ensure the safety of participants and spectators. Following the parade, a service will be held at the War Memorial Garden, where wreaths will be laid to honour those who served.  A church service will be held at St John’s immediately after the gathering at the War Memorial Garden and all are welcome to attend.

The Armistice Day Commemoration Service will take place on Monday 11 November, during which the Town Mayor will lay the People’s Wreath at the base of the town’s War Memorial. This year, the People’s Wreath offers a special opportunity for community involvement. Starting Friday 1 November  residents can visit the Burgess Hill Town Council Help Point at 96 Church Walk to fill the wreath with Remembrance Day poppies in memory of all who have lost their lives in conflicts around the world. Contributions will be accepted until the day of the commemorative service before the service is held.

“We invite everyone to join with us to pay tribute to the brave individuals who have served our country,” said Councillor Janice Henwood, the Town Mayor of Burgess Hill. “The placing of the poppies and the People’s Wreath provide meaningful and very visual ways for our town to show that we will never forget.”

For more information about the events, please contact the Burgess Hill Town Council Community Events team on 01444 247726 or pop into the Help Point at 96 Church Walk.

Armistice Day 2023

On Armistice Day, Saturday 11 November 2023 at 11am, Burgess Hill Town Council and the Royal British Legion Burgess Hill Branch jointly commemorated the event. Town Councillors, Royal British Legion Colour Party, and Town Council Staff marched from the Help Point in Church Walk to the War Memorial .

There was a 2 minutes silence after which there was a short ceremony to remember all the animals that served, suffered and died alongside the British, Commonwealth and Allied forces in the wars and conflicts of the 20th century.

It was also the 100-year anniversary of the installation of the war memorial and descendants of those named on the memorial were welcomed by the Royal British Legion to lay a wreath.

Burgess Hill Town Council’s Help Point hosted the People’s Wreath for members of the public to donate their poppy to the wreath. The wreath was placed on the War Memorial on Armistice Day.
